Who Are We?
Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Sporting Kansas City announced an expansion of its affiliate academy program, providing Quad City and Eastern Iowa soccer players a direct connection and natural pathway to the professional level. Sporting KC were national champions in the MLS in 2013 and winners of three Open Cup titles in the last six years. The MLS is the top professional league in the United States, at the pinnacle of the player development pyramid and now the base of that pyramid is firmly established at the TBK Bank Complex through Sporting Iowa.

Sporting Iowa’s Eastern operations will be run and overseen by Director of Coaching, Paul Dayrell, who recognizes the significance of such a prestigious affiliation, “The Quad Cities is a hotbed of talent and potential, that will immensely benefit from a quality, professionally run program with a clear long term player development pathway, that can keep our elite players training locally in the optimal environment. Partnering with Sporting KC provides the true pinnacle to the developmental pyramid and the opportunity for our local talent to set their goals as big as their dreams.”
As Sporting Kansas City Academy Affiliates, Eastern Iowa players will enjoy significant benefits such as:
-
A professionally run and organized soccer club experience from 5U through 19U
-
A natural pathway to one of the top professional MLS teams in the country
-
An invitation to participate in tournaments/events exclusive to Academy Affiliate members.
-
Sporting Clubs Network Calendar, exclusive events, contests, & discounted Sporting KC and Women’s professional team Swope Park Rangers tickets.

Sporting Iowa first established operations in Des Moines in 2014 with pathway clubs, West Des Moines Soccer Club and Johnson Urbandale Soccer Club. Sporting Iowa has established itself as the number one youth soccer club in Iowa with incredible success on the field . In 2017 Sporting Iowa was named Sporting Club Network Member of the Year. Our vision within Sporting Iowa is to develop, assist and support every player in achieving his/her full potential as an athlete, both on and off the field by providing the appropriate training, mentorship and soccer opportunities.
Director of Coaching, Paul Dayrell is no stranger to Iowa soccer, creating programming and a player development pathway that has seen unprecedented success in Iowa. In 2013, while in Iowa City, Dayrell’s 17U Girls made history becoming the first and only team from Iowa to win a U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Regional Title and to represent Iowa at a National Championship. More important than any team success are the many players that have moved on to play at the next level, whether that be into the Sporting KC MLS Academy program or to continued education playing in college.
In addition to club, Dayrell has coached locally at Assumption and Alleman HS and is currently an assistant coach at St. Ambrose University.
Dayrell holds his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) ‘A’ License, USSF National Youth License, is an instructor for the USSF licensing courses in Iowa, is an ODP head coach and serves as Boys Director for Iowa Soccers Developmental Camp.
